Bad Manners in Gaming

It doesn’t matter how great a game is; some people will always try to ruin the fun. Usually, this is called bad manners, or BM for short.

There isn’t just one way to BM, and it’ll really depend on the game you’re playing, but this term usually refers to any type of rude or disrespectful behavior towards another player. It can be something like spamming emotes, writing rude messages in the chat, or stalling because they know you’re going to win or lose the game.

Depending on how bad it is, it can even be consideredcyberbullying. Unfortunately, most of us have dealt with some form of bad manners. If you’ve experienced this before, these are a few ways to deal with rude gamers.

1. Try Talking to Them (but Keep It Short)

Granted, this tip won’t work every time, and it often depends on who you’re playing with. If you’re friends or people you know are being a bit too rude to you when playing, let them know you’re feeling uncomfortable. Not everyone has the same sense of humor, so it’s important to set some boundaries before things get out of hand.

If you’re playing with strangers online, you could also tell them you don’t like their behavior. Of course, this might backfire as some internet “friends” might keep bothering you once they know they’re getting to you. So it’s best to try to keep it short and if it doesn’t work, just move on.

2. Step Away From the Game

When you’re playing competitive games online, it isn’t strange that some players will try to get into your head. This means they’ll try to get you mad by BMing or being completely disrespectful.

Whenever that happens, you can—and probably should—take a break from the game. Yes, it’s easier said than done, especially when you feel you’re in the zone, but playing while you’re upset might not result well for you.

You might start rushing your moves, or you’ll start being careless. If you feel that’s happening to you, you should consider stepping away and taking a few minutes to relax.

3. Avoid Rude Gamers as Much as Possible

No matter what game you’re playing, there’s always a way to stop playing with any disrespectful player. You don’t need to say anything to them; just stop playing with them.

That might mean playing on a different server, at a different time, or whatever works for you. You might even need to change your clan or team to avoid them, but it’s better to play peacefully than to deal with impolite players. Of course, if you feel that doesn’t work for you, there are other options you’re able to try.

4. Mute Disrespectful Players

Most games let you mute other players, either in or outside a match. This is a quick and easy way to avoid bothersome players without them realizing it at first.

Again, this will depend on the game you’re playing, but you should be able to find a mute button during a match, or you should be able to mute their chat. Of course, if the game doesn’t offer this feature, you might need to do something more drastic.

5. Block Players

When everything else fails, you can always block toxic players. Blocking a player should be fairly easy in most games, so don’t be afraid to do it.

While you might want to try some other tips on the list first, don’t be afraid to block any player continually bothering you. Depending on how social the game you play is, you should consider blocking them on social media. Some players will find ways to reach out to you if that means they get to annoy you.

6. Report Players

In some games, as soon as you block someone, you’ll also be able to report them for whatever reason you think necessary. However, not every game is that easy.

In some games, you’ll need to talk to tech support in order to block a player. Either way, if you think the player deserves it, you should report them. Not only will you help yourself, but you might alsohelp keep the community safe.

Play Games Peacefully

No matter what type of online game you play, it’s always important to play peacefully and without bothering other players. Probably most of us have been rude at least once when we’re playing, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right way to behave.

Whenever you feel like rude players are getting to you, feel free to step away and try some relaxing games.
