Six years afterThe Mandalorianpremiered, I can’t believe we still haven’t seenDin Djarinuncovering and confronting this painful aspect of his backstory. It’s no secret thatStar Warsmovies and TV showshave struggled significantly with reception over the years, particularly since the beginning of the sequel trilogy. Although several ofStar Wars’best TV showshave been released since then, the franchise has suffered some of its biggest flops during this period as well.

Yet,The Mandalorianis easily one of the franchise’s greatest successes, and it may be the single greatest success of DisneyStar Wars. This extends to Din Djarin, who has become one ofStar Wars’best characters. Din has brought about a newfound interest in the Mandalorians, the likes of which haven’t really been seen sinceStar Wars: The Clone Wars(and, of course, Boba Fett before that). Even with so much emphasis on the Mandalorians, though, this one aspect of Mandalorian history—and its connection to Din Djarin—still hasn’t been explored inThe Mandalorian.

The Children Of The Watch Are Directly Descended From Death Watch

Death Watch Was A Violent Mandalorian Terrorist Group

Din Djarin was raised as part of the Children of the Watch, or Followers of the Way, an orthodox Mandalorian sect that tends to be seen as zealous among more mainstream Mandalorians. Din Djarin being a Child of the Watch is why he follows the Creed not to remove his helmet, whereas other Mandalorians, such as Bo-Katan Kryze, routinely take theirs off. While Din’s history with this sect is interesting enough, there is also a massive connection between the Children of the Watch and another notorious Mandalorian sect.

That is,the Children of the Watch are directly descended from the Mandalorian terrorist group Death Watch. On theStar Warsscreen thus far,Death Watchhas been most prominently shown inThe Clone Wars, in which their ruthlessness was depicted quite clearly. In fact, Death Watch ended up working directly with Darth Maul, which led to Maul taking control of Mandalore and killing Satine Kryze, Duchess of Mandalore and sister to Bo-Katan, in the process.

Although the Children of the Watch are not quite so violent as Death Watch, and they are distinct factions, the Children of the Watch do adhere much more strictly to the oldest Mandalorian traditions, and they are descended from Death Watch. With Din raised as a Child of the Watch, this means that his backstory is directly linked to this radical Mandalorian sect and its bloody history. Despite that, this critical aspect of Din Djarin’s story has yet to be explored inThe Mandalorian.

Din Djarin Doesn’t Know His Sect Was Once Allied With The Separatists

This Is Massive, Given The Separatists Were Responsible For Din Djarin’s Worst Tragedy

From all that’s been shown inThe Mandalorianthus far,Din has no idea that his Mandalorian sect was once aligned with the Separatists. While the Clone Wars occurred decades earlier intheStar WarstimelinethanThe Mandalorian, this history still has major significance to Din as it was the Separatists who attacked the planet on which Din grew up, Aq Vetina, and killed his parents in the process. It was this attack, in fact, that led to Din becoming a Mandalorian foundling, as a warrior of Death Watch rescued him.

One prominent (and rather convincing)Mandaloriantheory also suggests that Death Watch may even have been responsible for this attack, as deceitfully orchestrating a battle like this one was certainly in Death Watch’s wheelhouse. That theory has yet to be confirmed, but, in either case,Din Djarin’s own Mandalorian sect was directly aligned with the forces that killed his parents and wiped out his people, and, from all that’s been shown, he has no idea. This inevitable discovery will completely change Din’s character.

One Devastating Mandalorian Season 1 Theory Could Still Be True, 4 Years Later (& It Would Change Din Djarin Forever)

A tragic theory about the attack on Din Djarin’s homeworld is still possible now, and it could have huge effects on the future of The Mandalorian.

Din Djarin Could Question His Whole Mandalorian Life If He Were To Find Out

This Would Be A Massive (And Painful) Discovery For Din

Since becoming a Mandalorian foundling,Din Djarin has completely dedicated his life to the Mandalorian way. In fact,The Mandalorianseason 3 revealed just how committed Din continues to be to the Mandalorians, as he reified his dedication to the Way when he enteredthe Mandalorian Living Watersand became redeemed. Realizing that his own Mandalorian sect played a role (the extent of which remains unknown) in his parents' death and village’s destruction would likely cause Din Djarin to question his entire identity.

This would also be interesting as it pertains to Bo-Katan, with whom Din Djarin has grown rather close. Bo-Katan was directly involved with Death Watch, as shown inThe Clone Wars, and that would feel like yet another betrayal to Din Djarin, in all likelihood. It’s therefore a bit surprising thatThe Mandalorianhas yet to explore this storyline forDin Djarin, although that could be coming in upcoming Mandalorian projects, particularlyThe Mandalorian and Grogu.
