Summary

After his brother successfully bonds with Seasmoke inHouse of the Dragonseason 2, Alyn of Hull departs from book lore by rejecting Corlys’ idea to try to claim his own dragon. Now leaving it nearly impossible forCorlys to hide that he fathered Alyn and Addamof Hull, the latter finally found his desired purpose when shockingly becoming thenew rider of Laenor Velaryon’s dragon Seasmoke. Rather than the typical avenue of the rider seeking out the dragon,Seasmoke chose Addam as his riderand sought him out at Driftmark, perhaps sensing his familial connection to Laenor.

Considering Addam was able to claim Seasmoke and Rhaenyra still required more riders for Dragonstone’s unclaimed dragons,Corlys Velaryon suggested to Alyn that he could try claiming one for himself. Quite surprisingly, Alyn of Hull rejects his father’s proposition, instead stating that he is “salt and sea” in an unsubtle reversal ofBaela Targaryen’s sentiments about Driftmarkearlier inHouse of the Dragonseason 2. Though Addam of Hull becomes a skilled, battle-experienced dragonrider, this isn’t the path that Alyn follows inHouse of the Dragon.

Alyn Of Hull Does Not Get A Dragon In The Dance Of The Dragons

Alyn Doesn’t Try To Claim One In House Of The Dragon

Unlike his brother,Alyn of Hull doesn’t claim a dragon in the Dance of the Dragons – nor does he even try. Unless Alyn were to try to claim the wild dragons remaining on Dragonstone, the Cannibal and Grey Ghost, there aren’t any readily available for him to try mastering anyway after Ulf claimed Silverwing and Hugh Hammer claimed Vermithor. Additionally, it appears that Rhaena will try claimingSheepstealer in the Vale, limiting the pool of available dragons even further.

Why Vermithor Allowed That New Dragonrider To Claim Him

Vermithor officially has a new rider in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 7, with this dragonseed strongly earning their claim to the Bronze Fury.

Alyn of Hull and Rhaenyra Targaryen’s stories will seemingly remain quite separate in the Dance of the Dragons. It seemslikely that Alyn’s story will be confined to his relationship with his brother and Corlys, likely running the Velaryon fleet while Corlys conducts duties as Hand of the Queen. Whether Rhaena will join remains to be seen, but the Queen now already has her team of Targaryen dragonriders and “dragonseeds” for the Dance, comprised of herself and Syrax, Daemon and Caraxes, Jacaerys and Vermax, Baela and Moondancer, Addam of Hull and Seasmoke,Ulf and Silverwing, and Hugh and Vermithor.

George R.R. Martin’sFire & Bloodbook further confirms that Alyn of Hull never rides a dragon during the Dance. Addam and Seasmoke remain bonded through their deaths, but Alyn certainly proves that salt and sea run through his veins as the son of shipwrightMarilda of Hull and the Lord of the Tides, Corlys Velaryon. However, whileAlyn doesn’t have a dragon in eitherHouse of the DragonorFire & Blood, his decision to not even try to claim one departs from the book.

House Of The Dragon Season 2, Episode 7 Ending Explained

House of the Dragon season 2, episode 7, is packed with fire and blood. Here’s our breakdown of the season’s insane penultimate episode.

Alyn Of Hull Does Try To Claim Dragons In Fire & Blood

Alyn Is One Of The “Dragonseeds” Who Attempts To Claim Dragons In The Book

The process of Corlys Velaryon’s bastard sons trying to get dragons is very different in the show than it is in Martin’s 2018 book. InHouse of the Dragon, Addam doesn’t actually attempt to claim Seasmoke, but rather is cornered and chased by Seasmoke as the dragon chooses him as his new bond. InFire & Blood, Addam took up Rhaenyra’s call for bastards with Valyrian blood to come to Dragonstone and attempt to claim the available dragons, where he successfully bonded with Seasmoke. However,Alyn of Hull joined Addam at the “Sowing,”as he also attempted to claim dragons inFire & Blood.

AfterAddam of Hull successfully rode the dragon Seasmokein the book,Alyn sought out the wild dragon Grey Ghost, who made his home on Dragonstone but had never been claimed or ridden before. Alyn couldn’t find Grey Ghost, so he instead unsuccessfully tries to claim the wild dragon Sheepstealer, whose storyHouse of the Dragonchanged fromFire & Blood’s bookto reveal that he resides in the Vale of Arryn, not Dragonstone. In the book,Alyn enters Sheepstealer’s lair on Dragonstone and has his cloak set aflame by the dragon, leaving him alive but burned and scarred after the traumatic incident.

Alyn doesn’t try to claim a dragon again after being burned by Sheepstealer. In the book, Sheepstealer is then claimed by a character named Nettles, who appears to have been cut fromHouse of the Dragon.

Why Doesn’t Alyn Want A Dragon In House Of The Dragon?

Alyn Is “Salt & Sea,” Not Fire & Blood

Though he could achieve incredible glory and power with one, Alyn of Hull has no interest in trying to claim a dragon inHouse of the Dragon. He’s often tried to hide the truth of his parentage, such asAlyn shaving his silver hair, and trying to claim a dragon would immediately tell the world that he has the Valyrian blood of Corlys Velaryon. Alyn has dedicated his entire life to his work on ships at Driftmark, andhe isn’t going to give up this purpose connected to the “salt and sea” that defines him just because his Valyrian bloodmay give him an upper hand with dragons.
