Episode 3 picked up where the previous episode left off, with Many off in hiding. This allows much of the outing to focus on Ray, who continues to suffer the consequences of his and Manny’s actions.

Dope Thief Episodes 1 & 2 Review - Wagner Moura & Brian Tyree Henry Are The Crime Thriller Duo I Didn’t Know I Needed

Dope Thief episodes 1 & 2 thrive on contrast, blending thrills & laughs with good-natured criminal protagonists in an authentic & cold street setting.

It turns out that Manny had a massive argument with Sherry after telling her to leave her house. He then saw the bikers waiting for him at his apartment and hid on a train. As Manny found himself on his way to the airport, he wondered if this was a sign that he should go back to Brazil and find his sister. But having realized he couldn’t get through the TSA, Manny broke into Theresa’s house to hide. He chose that specific place to hide from the authorities simply because he was sure Theresa wouldn’t be there.

4Why Ray’s Father Was Stabbed In Prison

Bart Was Used As Bait To Get To Ray

After Malik, the gun store clerk, reluctantly tells the bikers about Ray and his father, Bart, the cartel has the latter stabbed in prison. Once Ray arrives at the prison, he finds the bikers waiting to kill him, realizing that the stabbing was meant to lure Ray out of hiding. Ray manages to stall the attack long enough to see Bart in a hospital bed, wounded but alive. Unfortunately, Bart has realized from his assault that it was because people were looking for Ray over something he did. This makes their father-son relationship even more tense than before, especially as Ray leaves him with a spiteful farewell, expecting to die just moments later.

3How Ray Survives The Biker Ambush At The Prison

Ray’s Life Was Saved By Some Miraculous Intervention

Ray was ready to die fighting the bikers outside the prison, hoping Theresa and Michelle didn’t have to witness it firsthand. While all hope seems lost for Ray, he appears to have been saved by a miracle at the last minute. After seeing Ray with the suspicious bikers in the prison’s nearby bar, the bartender calls the authorities, warning them that something terrible is about to happen.

By the time Ray steps outside, ready to go down shooting, the police arrive and arrest the bikers, with Ray thanking God for letting him live another day. However, now that the authorities have captured these bikers, the DEA will have plenty more leads in their investigation into the cartel and Ray and Manny’s botched robbery.

2Manny’s Proposal To Sherry Explained

Ray Gives Manny And Sherry A Surprise In Dope Thief

While searching for Manny in his apartment, Ray finds a hidden case containing an engagement ring that his friend intended to offer Sherry. Later on in the episode, when Manny and Sherry are arguing, Ray tries to prove to her how much Manny loves her by revealing the engagement ring. Though Ray puts both Manny and Sherry on the spot, Manny ends up proposing to Sherry.

The episode’s final scene implies that Sherry said “yes,” as Manny claims they were all celebrating with a bottle of champagne. It’s unclear when or how Manny was actually going to propose, but Ray’s intervention certainly made it happen sooner than planned regardless.

The Cartel Sends Another Disturbing Message In Dope Thief

It seems likeDope Thieftook some cues from David Fincher’sSe7enwith this episode. After Manny proposes to Sherry at her house, Ray finds a box sitting out on her front lawn. Ray opens it to find Malik’s severed head staring at him, as the bikers had him shot dead while torturing him for information. Ray also finds a note demanding that he return what he and Manny stole from them, or else more deaths will come.

Dope Thief Season 1 Review - I Wanted More Of The Crime Thriller’s Premise But It Doesn’t Hold Brian Tyree Henry & Wagner Moura Back From Greatness

A show that has greatness in it but may have miscalculated its climax. Either way, Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura are excellent.

This unwanted package ends the episode on a disturbing note (no pun intended) that sours Manny and Sherry’s engagement celebration. This head in a box is clearly another message from the cartel meant to scare Ray and Manny, showing once more what kind of threat they are dealing with. Also, the fact the bikers know where Sherry is now proves that her life is in danger.
