Google Reimagines Notetaking With the AI-Powered NotebookLM
As technology continues to evolve, it is not surprising that even the most mundane tasks, such as notetaking, are being revolutionized by AI-powered tools. Google’s latest addition to its suite of productivity apps, NotebookLM, is a testament to this continued innovation.
NotebookLM is the new name for Project Tailwind, an experimental AI-powered notebook from Google Labs designed to help people learn faster. But what exactly does it use AI for, and can you use it yet?

What Is Google’s NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is an AI-powered notetaking app that aims to streamline the notetaking process by helping you make the most out of your notes. The LM in the name stands for Language Model. However, unlike other language models, NotebookLM’s AI features come into play after you take notes.
The main point of NotebookLM is to elicit and extract data from notes you’ve already written. Rather than helping you write notes, this AI notetaking app helps you use your notes more efficiently. You can ask it to find connections between notes, compare the views expressed in two notes, or summarize your notes.

This is facilitated through the ability to “ground” NotebookLM in your notes and sources, resulting in a custom AI familiar only with the information that is relevant to you. Grounding means the AI won’t look into other online sources to answer your questions, ensuring the answers come directly from your notes, which it will treat as the most important source.
Source-grounding also prevents NotebookLM from fabricating false answers. If NotebookLM can’t find the answer to your question in your notes, it’ll simply say so. While NotebookLM’s source-grounding will drasticallyreduce the chances of the AI hallucinating, fact-checking is still essential. NotebookLM accompanies each response with citations, similar to BingAI chat, to make fact-checking convenient.

NotebookLM can assist with generating creative ideas beyond Q&A. For instance, you could write your ideas for a video and ask NotebookLM to generate a script for it. If yoyouresent an idea, you could ask NotebookLM to generate some questions that the audience might have and prepare better.
How to Sign-Up to and Use Google’s NotebookLM
This app is currently in closed beta, but you can join theNotebookLM waitlistto gain early access and experience its features firsthand. The waitlist is currently only available to users in the USA.
Once you’re on the waitlist, you’ll eventually get an email from Google saying you’re in on the NotebookLM beta. From there, using NotebookLM is as simple as downloading the app and signing in with your Google Account.

Maximize the Value of Your Notes With Google’s NotebookLM
NotebookLM, an AI-powered notetaking app developed by Google Labs, sets out to help you maximize the value of your notes. Unlike other AI language models, NotebookLM’s AI features become relevant after you’ve taken notes. You can ground the AI to answer based solely on your notes, making the responses genuinely tailored for you.
The big question will be how NotebookLM compares to the other big hitters in the world of AI-powered notetaking apps, like Notion. Until NotebookLM launches, we’ll have to wait and see.

When you need extra help focusing on reading and writing notes clearly, try using these apps and online tools designed to make those tasks easier.
