While some books are getting major overhauls, fans of the currentGreen Lanternseries have nothing to worry about. Jeremy Adams and Xermánico are staying on the title to continue Hal Jordan’s story. However, information about the Emerald Knight’s book has been released as part of the broader October solicitations. This fall inGreen Lantern #16, Hal, John Stewart and Guy Gardner are going to be fighting their old ally Mogo, who’s set to become a Red Lantern amid all the chaos currently happening to the Emotional Spectrum.
But beforeGreen Lantern #16, a new one-shot will set the stage for this new era.Green Lantern Civil Corps Special #1by Adams,Green Lantern: War Journal’sPhillip Kennedy Johnson, and Salvador Larroca will see Lord Premier Thaaros starting a war to retrieve John Stewart’s newly acquired Dark Star Ring. With the walls closing in and a surprising foe on their tails, the Green Lanterns attempt to finally expose the United Planets for their numerous crimes against the DC Universe.

The Green Lanterns Have Been Steadily Approaching War
The usual custodians of the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe, mysteriously disappeared and control of the peacekeeping force was handed over to the United Planets. Leading the United Planets was Lord Premier Thaaros, an unscrupulous politician who was secretly planning to use the Corps to gain control over the Emotional Spectrum.Thaaros’ actions drove away two of the Corps’ best members, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, leaving the organization vulnerable to the Lord Premier’s influence.
John returned to Earth, where he quickly became the target of the Radiant Dead, an extension of the Old God Olgrun who was desperate to possess John’s body. Olgrun used his pawns to bring Green Lantern to the far side of the DC Universe where John discovered the Dark Star of the Fenn, a cosmic rift that led straight to the Old God. To keep Olgrun from breaking through the Dark Star,Green Lantern ventured into the rift and claimed the Darkstar Ring, one of the seven aspects of Olgrun.
John learned the power of the Darkstar Ring inGreen Lantern: War Journal #9 (2024)!
Meanwhile, Hal was preoccupied with investigating the destruction of the Emotional Spectrum’s Central Power Batteries. After finding a new Power Ring and energy source, Hal left Earth and discovered that the perpetrator behind the attack was none other than Thaaros, who was eliminating every other Corps to make sure he was the sole possessor of the Emotional Spectrum. Worse, Thaaros had also secretly replaced the United Planets’ leading council with members of his shape-shifting race, giving Thaaros unilateral control of the United Planets and the Green Lantern Corps.

Lord Premier Thaaros sends a surprising foe to retrieve the Dark Star Ring from John Stewart, which leads to a desperate plan to expose the United Planets as a force of evil. Allies and enemies will join this special issue to launch the Green Lanterns in a direction that will change the DC cosmos forever!
Anyone paying attention to one or both of theGreen Lanterntitles knows how much things have changed. Thaaros has considerably wounded the Emotional Spectrum and based on the development of Carol Ferris’ ex, new types of Lanterns fueled by new emotions are starting to pop up. But Thaaros doesn’t care as long as it gets him what he wants: immutable control over the most powerful force in the DC Universe. Andif that means sacrificing the Green Lantern Corps, Thaaros will do that in a heartbeat.
…fans don’t need to worry about there not being a Green Lantern Corps since Hal’s already prepared a backup.
While fans have yet to see how this civil war will shake out, the cover ofGreen Lantern Civil Corps Special #1gives a hint. Hal fights Red Lantern Sinestro, Jo Mullein fights Jessica Cruz, and John appears to be fighting the supposedly deceased Kilowog. This cover brings up a lot of questions that, unfortunately, fans might not find out the answer to until Absolute Power comes to a close. But if this war does succeed in destroying the Corps, where does Green Lantern go from here?
Assuming that Thaaros’ actions do wind up fracturing the Corps completely, all won’t be lost.Hal’s already discovered a secondary Green Lantern Central Power Battery on Earth, along with a new cache of rings, one for every Earth-based Lantern and more. If Thaaros does drive the Corps apart or his assault on the Emotional Spectrum backfires (which it pretty much already has), fans don’t need to worry about there not being a Green Lantern Corps since Hal’s already prepared a backup.
Restarting the Green Lantern Corps is Necessary at this Point
To be blunt, Thaaros has done irreparable damage to the current Green Lantern Corps. As they are now, they’re an extension of a fascist desperate to exert his will on the rest of the universe. If the Corps splinters, it’s probably for the best. Hal Jordan has the means necessary to restart the Corps and he’s got the experience of leading it. Things might be getting darker for the DC’s cosmic heroes, but this potentially massive change could be exactly what theGreen Lanternsneed.
Green Lantern Civil Corps Special #1is available on October 9th andGreen Lantern #16is available on October 16th from DC Comics.
Green Lantern
Green Lantern is the name given to multiple enforcers of intergalactic justice in the DC Universe.
