How to Add a Text Editing Menu to Obsidian With cMenu

Obsidian is a powerful note-taking app that lets you create and format notes in Markdown. But sometimes, you might want to lay back and format your notes by clicking on a toolbar, rather than using your keyboard to jot down Markdown syntax.

That’s where cMenu comes in. cMenu is a plugin that appends a customizable text editing menu to Obsidian—adding a hint of a UI to your workspace. it’s possible to add custom commands to the menu, and give yourself the choice to use the graphical interface to format your notes instead.

1. Install cMenu for Obsidian

Installing cMenu is like installing any other Obsidian plugin. cMenu is available on the Obsidian community plugins page andGitHub.

2. Setup and Use cMenu in Obsidian

Next, you’ll need to configure cMenu to suit your preferences. cMenu comes with nine commands by default, but you may add or remove commands to your liking. This is a powerful feature that enables many possibilities, as you can add any Obsidian command to the cMenu toolbar.

Combined with the fact that you can add custom commands to the Obsidian commands list through some other plugins, you can add non-native functions and commands to cMenu. That, however, is a talk for another time. Let’s stick to the basics for now.

Installing cMenu in Obsidian

Go to Obsidian Settings. Then, on the left bar, underCommunity plugins> clickcMenu. You’ll see a list of commands and settings that you could customize.

Drag and drop the commands to change the order. To add a new command, click the plus sign next tocMenu commands. This will open the Obsidian command browser. Pick the command you want, and cMenu will add it to the list. To delete an existing command, click the trash bin icon next to the command’s name.

Once you’re done rearranging the commands, click the button next tocMenu refresh. This will refresh the cMenu with the current settings.

cMenu will appear whenever you’re editing a note. Select some text in your note and click the icon for the command you want from the cMenu toolbar. Simple as that! Now you canformat your Obsidian noteswithout having to type Markdown all the time.
