If you have a Chromebook, it was likely set up to use the most common language in the country where you bought it. You might want to switch the system or keyboard input language to something else. That’s easy to do on a Chromebook.

Setting a New Language on Chromebook

To change the display language, just go to the settings menu. On the left side of the window, selectAdvancedto open the drop-down menu, then clickLanguages and Inputs.

You’ll then see the Languages menu. At the top, you’ll see the current display language. In this case, it’s American English, shown as “English (United States).”

To change it, click theChangebutton. You can browse through the list of available languages as well as search for the one you want. Click to select it and then clickConfirm and restartto reboot into a different language.

You can alsoadd languages for displaying website contentin the Languages menu under “Website languages.” Once again, the default is English in this case. Click theAdd languagesbutton to bring up another menu to select and install any other languages.

You can then choose the priority of languages for display. Click the “More actions” menu with the three dots to the right of each language and then clickMove to the top,Move up, orMove downto change its position in the list.

Switch Between Keyboard Layouts on Chromebooks

To change the keyboard language, go to Settings and selectAdvanced > Languages and inputs > Inputs and keyboards. You can add any keyboard layouts with the Add input methods button to bring up a menu of available layouts.

It’s easy to switch keyboard languages when you’re typing. Suppose you were typing an email to someone who speaks a different language. You can cycle through the installed keyboard layouts with theCtrl + Spacekeyboard shortcut.

you’re able to also switch languages by clicking on the time in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, clicking the dot to see the second page of options, and then clickingKeyboard. You’ll see a menu of installed layouts and can switch that way.

Using the keyboard shortcut is faster, but it’s also easy to trigger it by accident. If the keyboard isn’t working the way you expect, look by the clock to see if you’ve activated another layout. You can switch back by usingCtrl + Spaceto cycle through your keyboard layouts.
