The Phone app is great, but these features could make it better

What you should know about Samsung’s call recording feature

Samsung only allows the call recording function in regions that permit it. If you don’t see the option on your Android device, it’s a legal requirement that Samsung follows.

Also, Samsung’s call recordingdoes not work on Wi-Fi calls.

In regions like India, the One UI Phone app records calls without the recipient’s consent.

Meanwhile, European countries and certain US states require all parties to consent to the recording.

The Phone app also makes an announcement so that everyone knows they are on a recorded call.

Comparatively, Apple supportscall recording on iPhones (iOS 18)in select countries.

Can I record WhatsApp, Telegram, or Messenger calls on a Samsung phone?

With the soaring popularity of instant messaging (IM) apps, many prefer apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Messenger to place voice calls (VoIP). These apps use their own dialer and don’t offer a call recording function.

If you receive calls from messaging apps, you must use a dedicated call recorder device to save conversations.

You can only record your normal voice calls on your Samsung Galaxy device.

Can I record calls using third-party apps on a Samsung phone?

So far, we have discussed the built-in method for recording calls on a Samsung phone. What about third-party call recording apps from the Play Store?

Third-party call recording apps utilize accessibility APIs to record calls without obtaining consent from all parties involved. The practice is not considered legal in many parts of the world.

Google announced a policy changeto prevent third-party call-recording apps from using accessibility APIs. The change came into effect on May 11, 2022.

We tried a couple of call recording apps on our Samsung Galaxy S23 (runningAndroid 13, based on One UI 5.1), but couldn’t hear the other side of the recording clip.

Even now, the policy remains unchanged in 2025. It doesn’t work onAndroid 14andAndroid 15.

Still, depending on your OS version and location circumstances, a fewworkarounds existthat can let you bypass these restrictions.

Record your conversations on the go

While the road of third-party recording apps has mostly hit a regulatory dead-end, Samsung’s built-in tool remains a straightforward option.

More importantly, keep in mind that the legality of recording calls varies from country to country, or even by state. We recommend obtaining consent before recording a call.

There’s a whole One UI experience to explore beyond Samsung’s call recording feature.

If One UI becomes too overwhelming, you may simplify it further byuninstalling unnecessary apps.

I bought my S22 from the U.S and it did not come with call recording, but I’m now using it in Nigeria where there’s no privacy restrictions. Does Samsung make provision for aftermarket installation of the call recorder in appropriate regions?

This statement is false:

“Meanwhile, European countries and US states require all parties to consent to the recording.”

It varies from state to state in the US. I record, and backup, every phone call as my state does not require both parties consenting.

App combo: Call Recorder Automatic + DriveSync to back them up.

Just wanted to let you know something as its not corrected what you’re saying.

Most countries in EU allowing you to record private phone calls, perfectly legal and even your protected right. Its not allowed to record as 3rd party though, ie. Evesdropping.

The only countries that has somewhat more strict Laws are germany, austria, spain, France and italy.

But even though those contries still allow “public” calls and calls where you might need some or collect some sort of evidence for whatever reason. You are not allowed to make these recordings public unless its for “the greater good” ie. Corrupt politician convo?

So in other words basically all of EU allowing private phone call recordings as long as one part knows about it.

The reason Samsung etc removed this function is actually to do with CDPR, where each individual is protected from betong recorded by Corporations without their knowledge. I actually contacted them to ask about this, and because of this, they basically took the easy way out to not risk getting sued for recording. Although, i think our totalitarian EUSSR leaders kind of was hoping/threatening the big techs about this, convenient for them after all, with all their corruption and evilness.

Also pretty much the entire USA and all their states have a 1 party conscent for recording, i think there is one state where its sort of not allowed to record private calls, one of the communist/totalitarian states. But cant find info om which state it is, and I forgot too.

Its your own right to record, democratic, free speech and everything to record/memorise whatever you see fit. Wihter is for your protection or anything else should not matter. Only totalitarian regims that fear being recorded and have evidence against them make this a crime. Its in fact a type of tool for investigative journalism too.

Just wanted to let you know, and everyone else too who reads this.

Loganoh, i belive its been political all along. This particular thing (recording politiciians and what not) in secret have been villified on media, and from the politiciians themselves for att least the last decades. Over here in Sweden its been talked about in bad ways for more times i could remember.

Nedless to say, its only been brought up as something bad, and discussed if Laws need to be changed ny those who have been recorded red handed so to speak.

I didnt make it political, its the only thing its always been, just saying.

This article leads you to believe that recording phone calls without everyone’s consent is illegal in the US, which for most Americans is simply not true. Currently, there are 38 states where “one party consent” is all that is required to record a call, which means if you are on the call then you could record it without having to notify anyone that you are doing so. In 2022, Google stopped allowing apps on their platform to record calls altogether in an effort to avoid any potential lawsuits, but many feel they over-reacted since it remains legl in 80% of the US to record phone calls.

There are a ton of call recorder apps on the Play Store. I actually use Call Recorder Automatic + DriveSync to back them up..
