2 Ways to Share a New Job on LinkedIn

There are different ways to share a new job on LinkedIn, and all of them change how your connections and other platform users see the update. Using any or all of them for what suits your news can help you determine how you get the word out.

1. Start a Post

Using the desktop web interface, at the top of the homepage, click in theStart a posttext field at the top of the page. This is how you start any post, but selecting the dots icon at the bottom opens a new menu toAdd to your post.

This menu creates templates for your post that will make it more attractive and more immediately understandable to other users. Remember that this is here because there are a lot of different options for creating different kinds of posts. For now, clickNew position.

From here, you can upload a photo or choose from provided stock art to illustrate that your career is advancing. When you’re done, clickNextat the bottom of the window to view a preview of the post, including a sample text to get you started withrelevant hashtags. When you’re happy with it, click the bluePostbutton.

2. Add Experience

If you want to add an update in a way that is less flashy but might be better at actually getting to the people that you want to see it, you may want to try a different approach.

This time, navigate to your profile and scroll down to theExperiencesection. In the top right of this field, click the+icon to add a new experience. From the resulting dropdown menu, selectAdd position.

Unless this is your first ever job, this should be a familiar field allowing you to fill in text fields for your new employer, your position with them, skills that you use on the job, and other info. However, one potentially under-utilized tool is the toggle switch in the blue field at the top labeledNotify network.

If you toggle this toOn, then when you save your new position to your profile, it will send push notifications toall of your LinkedIn connections. So no big profile post, but you know for sure that all of your connections at least get a line of text in their notifications alerting them to your new position.

Options for using LinkedIn post templates for different occasions.

Is One Option Better Than the Other?

Is making a post better than just updating your experiences? That depends on how public you want to be with the announcement. If you want to update LinkedIn without notifying your network, you can keep a running list of your positions with that toggle switch set toOff—and no one will know about your new position without going to your profile.

That said, withNotify networkset toOn, you know that your connections will see it, but you’re not giving them much of an opportunity to interact with the information. They can’t share, react to, or comment on profile notifications the same way that they can on a post. You’re also potentially limiting the visibility to your network.

When you make a post, that post has the potential to be seen by people outside of your network – particularly if you use things like hashtags or call out the company. Further, when people do react to, comment on, or share your post, those actionsextend your visibilitybeyond your existing network.

A post also gives you more room to express your feelings about your new position. This is an art form in itself. Instead of just a notification saying, “Aaron started a new position,” you’re able to talk about how much you’re looking forward to working with a new team or using your skills in a new way as you develop your career.

Tell the World About Your New Job

Of course, these aren’t mutually exclusive options. You really should be updating your experiences, so you really might as well notify your network while you’re at it. And, even if you’re not big on self-promotion, creating even a basic post about your new position is easy with LinkedIn’s provided tools.
