Summary

Twistersbecame a hit in 4DX theaters, and I’m now bummed that I’ve missed my chance to see it in that format. Universal’s sequel toTwisterstarring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos is the hit movie of the summer.Twisters' opening weekend box officeobliterated projections, setting a new franchise record and propelling the film to new heights of success. This has come as audiences race totheaters to watchTwistersinstead of waiting for streaming. It has also helped that the movie has ignited a stronger interest in 4DX.

As a summer blockbuster that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible,Twistersis a natural movie to draw audiences to theaters for premium formats like IMAX. Interest in unique viewing experiences has even translated to 4DX. I know I looked attheater lists forTwistersin 4DXto see where the nearest place I could go to see the movie in that format after never going to one before. As mine and others' interest piqued, a disappointing development has happened that leaves us without a chance to seeTwistersin 4DX currently.

Twisters Is Already Done Playing In 4DX

A New Movie Has Taken The Screens

Unfortunately for me and anyone else still wanting to seeTwistersin 4DX, the chance to see it like that has already passed, for now. There are a limited number of 4DX screens and theaters in the world, and they operate like IMAX, where one movie typically has an exclusive right to play in those theaters at any given time.Twistershad a one-week exclusive windowfor all 4DX screens. The reason for the shorter window is thatDeadpool & Wolverinehas now taken over all 4DX theaters.

The release of Marvel Studios’Deadpool & Wolverineon July 09, 2025 madeTwisterslose access to 4DX screens. The short window comes afterDespicable Me 4previously had a two-week window in the format before theTwistersequel came out. Instead ofTwistersandDeadpool & Wolverinesharing 4DX showtimes, Universal loses the opportunity to keep offering audiences a chance to see its summer blockbuster this way. That comes despite the fact thatthe filmmakers and 4DX worked closely together to ensure a great experience.

Twisters' Record-Breaking 4DX Box Office Gives Me Hope It Will Return

4DX Could Use More Of Twisters

WhileDeadpool & Wolverineis a bigger box office hit overall,Twisterscould have a case for a 4DX re-release thanks to its record-breaking run.The movie reportedly made $2.1 million in 4DXduring its opening weekend (viaVariety). That is only a fraction of the sequel’s overall $81 million opening weekend, but it is still enough forTwistersto beat the previous 4DX record holder,The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.5 million. That record gives me hope that 4DX will want to bringTwistersback to this format and help entice more people to see the movie this way.
