Summary

The Incredibles 2was highly anticipated, yet the movie misseda perfect opportunity to feature a seriously shocking villain. As the sequel to a beloved Pixar film,Incredibles 2made history at the box office for animated moviesat the time of its 2018 release, drawing in both older fans who grew up with the original and younger kids dazzled by the cartoon superhero team. To appeal to both generations,The Incredible 2’s cast and charactersinclude old favorites like the titular family and Frozone as well as new roles like the business executive Winston Deavor and his tech-savvy sister Evelyn.

Incredibles 2was released 14 years after the originalIncrediblesfilm.

Like the original, the sequel explores whether crime-fighting should be legal when the Incredibles have a destructive villain encounter, leading the government to end the Superhero Relocation Program and leaving the family’s aide Agent Rick Dicker jobless. The setback inspires the head of the telecommunications company DevCorp and his sister Evelyn to recruit Helen to promote a pro-superhero agenda by defeating the elusive villain Screenslaver. InThe Incredible’s 2ending, Helen discovers that Screenslaver is Evelyn Deavor, who secretly distrusts Supers. Despite being clear from the start, this reveal is the crux of the climax, thus putting a big limitation on the finale.

Rick Dicker Would Have Been A Stronger Villain For Incredibles 2 Than Evelyn Deavor

Considering thatBob Odenkirk’sIncredibles 2character was going to be the villain, Disney produced the sequel without another main antagonist in mind, despite the fact thatRick Dicker would have had reasons to resent superheroes. His work in the first film goes underappreciated and gives him grief about spending taxpayers' dollars, and he receives even less respect in the sequel when he is forced to retire. His history with superheroes and personal suffering would have made Dicker an enticing option for a villain compared to Evelyn, who only has a sad backstory crammed into the exposition to justify her misdeeds.

Incredible 2’s Twist Villain Follows A Tired Disney Trope

Disney Introduces New Characters Just To Turn Them Evil In A Twist

FromBig Hero 6toZootopia, Disney has a habit of pulling one-dimensional characters into plots only to reverse their personalities in a spectacle that unmasks their diabolical but underdeveloped schemes. Evelyn Deavor fits this cliché as an unassuming sidekick seemingly in support of Elastigirl yet putting immense effort into dethroning heroes when superheroes are already banned. Her revenge plan is rendered obvious by the awkward inclusion of her childhood trauma and her name sounding like the words “Evil Endeavor.” Like other forced Disney surprise supervillains,Evelyn is simultaneously the most predictable choicefor the movie’s final foe.

5 Disney Villains That Tricked Everyone (& 5 We All Saw Coming)

Many of the more recent Disney villains have made excellent use of the motif, but some are a bit too on the nose to be anything but the bad guy.

AlthoughThe Incredibles 2had years of production and accomplished impressive feats at the box office, the sequel missed its chance to create a compelling antagonistwho would have most intensely betrayed both the Incredibles family and fans of the franchise. What is most disappointing is that Rick Dicker was a familiar role already primed for deeper character development, whereas Evelyn proved to be a random addition with stereotypical motivations. If Disney hopes to create truly transformational twists, the company must move away from its villain formula and spotlight those who are not so easily classified as good or evil.
