Iron ManandEmma Frost’smarriage is officially over. While it seems neither party necessarily wanted to end it, they’ve gone their separate ways – as Tony enters a dark new era, and Emma to leada new generation of exceptional mutants. Each has sent their lover a parting gift, andEmma had a last request of Tony Stark:to honor those who died against Orchis.
The Invincible Iron Man #20– written by Gerry Duggan, with art by Andrea Di Vito –features Tony and Emma’s last conversationtogether, highlighting what made the pair great one final time. They’re honest with their feelings, they make each other laugh, and both acknowledgethey got a little more attachedthan they intended.

The separation is so painful for the usually unflappable White Queen that she doesn’t even meet Tony in person, instead projecting herself into his mind. She does leave him an unfathomably big paycheck, but has one last favor for him: a mutant memorial.

The end of the Krakoan era began at 2023’s Hellfire Gala, when Orchis launched an attack, killingOmega-level mutantsand sending so many more to exile or their graves. They were boosted by Feilong, a genius who had bought Stark Industries out from under Tony and used Iron Man technology to strengthen the Sentinels. Emma Frost survived by going into hiding, wearing a power dampener and posing as Tony Stark’s secretary, Hazel Kendall. She wanted revenge for her people, and he wanted revenge for his company, so their fake marriage was a perfect smokescreen for their secret machinations.

Now that they’ve achieved their goals, however,the moment fans have dreaded has come to pass:Tony and Emma’s annulment.Tony offers to show Emma a multimedia presentation onwhy they should stay together; Emma sheds a few tears thatshe blames on allergies, and both exchange parting gifts. Tony gives Emma a scrapbook made by her cloned children that she thought had been destroyed. Emma gives Tony a huge sum of money, stolen from a variety of supervillains, and the request for a mutant memorial.. Tony gladly crafts one out of an abandoned Krakoan gate in Manhattan, with the inscription:

Dedicated to Those Who Paid the Ultimate Price to Fight Fascism.
Tony’s memorial will do more than serve as a place to mourn those lost…It will also stand as a painful artifact of Iron Man’sshort-lived marriage to Emma Frost.
