Kate Winslet Explains Why She Decided To Bring Lee Miller’s Story To The Screen

Kate Winslet Reveals That Her Role As Producer Helped Shape The Film

As a producer, Winslet was integral in bringing Miller’s story to the screen. She also made sure that the on-set atmosphere was one of camaraderie, and she ended up working with a lot of familiar faces.“Our camera operator, I had done The Reader with,” Winslet says,“Our first Assistant Director, I worked with him when I was 19, and he was 21 when I did Hamlet at Shepperton Studios. Our designer I did Iris with when I was 25 and then Finding Neverland.“These relationships were important to Winslet, especially when working on such a challenging film:

Being able to actually have an impact on the on-set energy and commitment from those creative people who helped us bring this thing to life, it was really very, very special, and we couldn’t have done it without that. They were all just so on board. And it was a really, really great, really great sense of commitment from everybody.

Bringing Miller’s story to life, though, was about much more than playing an interesting role. Winslet saw that Miller was"in danger of being defined by history in an inaccurate way"that was perhaps antithetical to how Miller actually wanted to be seen.“She was a model for a small sliver of time during her 20s, and she didn’t even like being a model,“Winslet says, continuing,“These labels have been slapped on her… [but] she wanted to be a photographer.”

Winslet sawLeeas an opportunity to change the way people are introduced to Miller. The film, Winslet says, tells the story of its subject at a time that the actress believes Miller would have been most proud of. Still, she acknowledges that what Miller went through likely defined how she talked about her work in her later years, citing the PTSD she likely experienced having seen such horrible things.

There was this code of silence - they just didn’t want to ever revisit that time. But the courage that she had, how she redefined femininity to mean resilience and compassion and determination, those were really important things for me. But also just the job that she did. She had more than earned her place at the table, and yet she wasn’t permitted to go because she was a woman. And she found a way, and she kept finding a way, and she just kept on going, and she lived her life on her terms. And it was very important that we captured that, that incredible part of who she was at her core in this film.
