Summary
A major Hollywood blockbuster film played an instrumental role in why theX-Menmovies didn’t include the classic costumes fromMarvelComics. Before Marvel Studios regained the rights to the X-Men, 20th Century Fox was the studio to bring the mutants to the big screen throughout the 2000s and most of the 2010s. One of the elements that stands out the most aboutthe originalX-Menmovie timelinewas their heavy inclusion of black leather costumes.
During the recentDeadpool & Wolverinepress conference thatScreen Rantwas present at, Feige revealed whythe originalX-Menmovieswent with black leather outfits instead of including traditional costumes from the comics. Based on its popularity at the time,The Matrixinfluenced the decision of the movie executives during this period as they brought X-Men to the big screen, with Feige stating the following:

There were studio execs in charge, who knew that The Matrix had been a big hit and The Matrix had black leather, so let’s put them in black leather.
10 Things No X-Men Movie Can Agree On
X-Men’s timeline has long been a wild and confusing mess with several different iterations and retcons throughout, resulting in big discrepancies.
The MCU Is Already Fixing The X-Men’s Movie Costume Problem
As the X-Men film universe is essentially coming to an end with the release ofDeadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios has already been fixing the costume problem with the mutants. InDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sir Patrick Stewart’s alternative version of Professor X was depicted visually a lot closer to the comics, with the movie also making nods toX-Men: The Animated Series. The Marvelseven brought back Kelsey Grammer as Beast, also a variant, who had a more accurate design to his comic book counterpart.
Deadpool & Wolverinemakes a stronger case that Marvel Studios will respect and acknowledge the comic book roots of the X-Men. WithHugh Jackman coming back as Wolverine, the Phase 5 movie will be the first time in the actor’s career that he is suiting up with Logan’s iconic costume from the Marvel lore. Even though it hasn’t been shown in theDeadpool & Wolverinetrailers, merchandise marketing has included Wolverine with his famous cowl, which means Jackman will likely be wearing one in the film.

Since this is the dedication that Marvel Studios has to only a handful of X-Men characters before the solo film has even happened, it’s exciting to imagine how far they will go with the other core characters as time goes on. WhiletheX-Menrebootis still in early stages of production with the script currently being written, seeing the MCU’s commitment already bodes well for their debut in the franchise. Hopefully, more news on theX-Menreboot will emerge over the next few months.
