It may seem like Wilson Fisk has achieved the power he’s always wanted, butDaredevil: Born Againis making him pay for the events of one pastMCUseries. ConsideringKingpin’s on-screen historyand his stint in jail for an assortment of serious crimes, it appears something of a miracle that Fisk was able to win the New York City mayoral race. His anti-vigilante platform managed to resonate with enough citizens to earn him success, and having such power over the city may seem like the ultimate dream for him. However,Born Againproves that Fisk is far from happy in his personal life.
After Wilson Fisk recovered from being shot in the eye by Maya Lopez, he spent some time tracking her down in Oklahoma. Because of his absence, his wife Vanessa was left in charge of his affairs back in New York, and it put an understandable strain on their marriage, even leading her to have an affair witha man named Adam. With Kingpin back in the city inDaredevil: Born Again, the couple has been trying to fix their relationship. Though Fisk may always have love for his wife, fixing their relationship is proving to be a difficult punishment for him that all blossomed because of another MCU show.

Matt’s current MCU love interest is Marvel therapist Heather Glenn, but she may find herself in a tricky position in future episodes. She’s recruited to provide couples counseling to Fisk and Vanessa, and the sessions embody everything that Fisk hates. Having to discuss the problems in their marriage means that Fisk has to own up to his mistakes, andtalking about his wife’s affair fills him with a rage that brings him back to his old Kingpin days.
I Can’t Get Over The MCU Putting Kingpin In Marriage Counselling
Daredevil: Born Again has given Wilson Fisk his most difficult task yet seen in the MCU: fixing the problems in his marriage to Vanessa.
Therapy is usually a helpful thing, but for someone resistant like Fisk, it feels more like a punishment. Throughout Netflix’sDaredevilseries, he’s only able to become more emotionally vulnerable when dealing with his wife. He’s not someone who enjoys outsiders probing into his personal affairs, especially if they are trying to get him to open up and be vulnerable. Therapy may be one of the only places where Fisk isn’t able to put up a mask, so despite having the power he craves in his professional life, he’s being punished for the choices he’s made in his personal one.

Kingpin’s Punishment Is All Because Of Echo
The downfall of the Fisks’ marriage happened because ofWilson’s experience inEcho, and this is ultimately why he’s facing a scenario that he seems naturally adverse to inBorn Again. The root cause of Vanessa and Fisk’s marriage breakdown was his disappearance from New Yorkwhile he was tracking down Maya Lopez in Oklahoma. Oddly enough, it doesn’t seem like Vanessa is aware of what Fisk was doing during that time, as she hasn’t mentioned it once. In fact, there’s been a lack of any overall mention of Echo herself, even from Kingpin.
Fisk left unannounced because he wanted to solve things with Maya on his own. Telling the truth to Vanessa wouldn’t completely fix the hole that his absence left, butit would at least be an easy way to help explain his intentions. The lack of extra context that Vanessa has inDaredevil: Born Againis what has caused their relationship to suffer, and now Wilson is paying the price by opening himself up in couples counseling. Despite the power that Kingpin now has, it’s interesting to see how the show is still having him pay for his previous actions in the MCU by showing their ramifications.
