Summary
Marvel Studios’X-Menmovie gets some interesting comments from Kevin Feige.Deadpool & Wolverinewill be the first major movie for the superhero team in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, though the film will not be the reboot of the mutants that Marvel has promised. X-Men characters from the Fox movies and more are in the film, which is a sort of multiversal love letter to the franchise. As for theMCU’s X-Men reboot, that movie is still some years away, though there has been some movement behind the scenes,
Speaking toio9,Kevin Feige commented on which characters could appear in the MCU’s X-Men movieand revealed which aspect ofX-Men ‘97should connect to the film. According to Feige, the idea at Marvel is to do like with Tom Holland’sSpider-Manmovies and have the MCU’s X-Men entries include a nice mix of characters that have been seen before in live-action and new ones. Speaking of Marvel’s Emmy-nominated animated series, Feige is excited to see “the soap opera elements of that world” make their way into the MCU. Check out the full quote below:

Well, it’s that phrase we use often at Marvel, which is “It’s an embarrassment of riches.” And there are a lot of great X-Men characters in the Deadpool & Wolverine film. There are a lot of great X-Men characters in all of the Fox versions of the X-Men films. And there are a lot of great X-Men characters that have never gone on the big screen. So I think, as we always try to do, as we did when we made the arrangement with Sony for Spider-Man, you’ll probably see a mix of characters you’ve seen before and characters you’ve never seen before.
I think the success of X-Men ’97 was really exciting for us to see people revisit and reconnect with that world. And dare I say, the soap opera elements of that world, which is one of the things that’s so exciting to us about jumping into it finally in the MCU.
Every Upcoming Marvel Movie: Full MCU Phase 6 List (& Beyond)
With Marvel Studios’ MCU now dominating the upcoming release slate for Marvel movies, here’s what to expect in the coming years and beyond.
When Could the MCU’s X-Men Be Released?
Some Mutants Have Already Been Appearing
After the success of Marvel Studios' first project based on the comics,Disney+‘sX-Men ‘97, demand for the MCU’s reboot of the mutant team has skyrocketed. While there is still no word on a director for the film or when it could start production, a major step has been taken toward making the X-Men reboot a reality. Marvel has reportedly hiredThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakeswriter Michael Lesslie to pen the script for the X-Men movie.
With a writer in place and the record-breaking status ofDeadpool & Wolverinebefore the movie has even been released, it would not be surprising if Marvel were to fast-track its X-Men movie. At the moment, the most believable place for the X-Men reboot would be at the start of the MCU’s Phase 7, after the Multiverse Saga concludes. This way,Hugh Jackman’s Wolverineand potentially other players from Fox’s X-Men movies could get their last time to shine as the X-Men inAvengers: Secret Wars, which should use many multiverse characters.
However, withX-Men ‘97being successful andDeadpool & Wolverinelikely following suit, Marvel could decide to bring in the studio’s version of the X-Men earlier. WithAvengers 5reportedly dropping Kang the Conqueror, an exciting new story for the film could be a version of Avengers vs X-Men, which would bring the latter team’s debut to 2026. However, if the mutants make their MCU debut in a separate movie, a script could be finished by early 2025, with a 2026 release afterAvengers 5. That said, theX-Menmovie will most likely come in 2027 afterAvengers: Secret Wars.
