Overhaul from My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia Confirms a Villain’s True Dark Past With One Brilliant Twist

Chapter 419 of My Hero Academia reveals the true backstory of one of the series' major villains, giving him an even darker origin.

Overhaul Being Admonished By His Former Boss Is An Amazing Penance

The Villain Will Be Reminded of His Sins Every Day, While Also Enjoying His Boss’ Company

In chapter 158 of theMy Hero Academiamanga, Overhaul states his belief in anancient theory that claims that Quirks originated as a virus transmitted by rats. Due to his extreme fear of germs, the man became obsessed with destroying this plague and turning humans back to normal. To achieve his dreams, he put the Yakuza Boss he admired into a Quirk-induced coma, and kidnapped the old man’s granddaughter, Eri. By using his Overhaul ability on the young girl, which allows him to destroy and reconstruct anything he touches, he could study Eri’s Quirk factor.

Chisaki’s actions are by farsome of the most atrocious and disturbing crimescommitted by a Villain. While never explicitly stated, it is heavily implied in chapter 427 that he was sentenced to life in prison as punishment for his sins. Yet, the chapter also reveals that Chisaki’s former boss was awakened thanks to several support items. Despite what his underling did to him, the elder Yakuza made a promise to visit Overhaul every day to scold him for his actions and force him to face the consequences of his actions.

Despite this being a punishment, it also seems to be the former Yakuza boss’ attempt at rehabilitating his underling. Chisaki felt a great deal of admiration for the man,as he was the one to save him from the streets. His approval and forgiveness may be what encourage Overhaul to change his ways and become a better person. The punishment may not be as harsh as expected for a criminal such as himself. Nonetheless, seeing as Deku is the one who devised Chisaki’s penance, it is not surprising that its main objective is to help the former Villain.

Overhaul May Yet Be Redeemed

While His Actions Cannot Be Forgiven, Chisaki Seems To Be Regretful

Throughout the series, many unredeemable villains have been introduced. Individuals like Muscular or All For One never once showed remorse for the agony they caused. The pain and suffering Overhaul inflicted on Eri is something that can never be forgiven. Still, the former Villain was shown to want to earn his redemption, as implied in chapter 427 when he begged his boss for forgiveness. Overhaul will still be reminded every waking moment of the errors he committed in the past, yet he will have the support of his boss as he tries to make up for what he did.

Overhaulwill forever be remembered as one of the worst Villains inMy Hero Academia. His crimes cannot be forgotten nor forgiven, but Horikoshi may be implying that he is still not completely irredeemable. Chisaki’s punishment may not be as severe as that of other Villains, but it is appropriate for the kind of person he became after his defeat at the hands of Izuku.
