This post contains a PREVIEW for Star Wars #48

Summary

Star Warsconfirms that even near the end of the Galactic Civil War,Princess Leiawas still struggling with her greatest trauma. Seemingly suffering from terrible nightmares, it’s being teased that new reports about the Empire’s activities betweenEmpire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedihave caused said traumas to resurface for the critical Rebellion general. After all, losing one’s entire homeworld isn’t something one just gets over.

In the new preview forStar Wars #48by Charles Soule and Jethro Morales,Princess Leia is suffering from some pretty horrific nightmares. Firstly, Leia is envisioning herself on her homeworld ofAlderaan as a child when the Death Star comes to destroy the planet. However, she’s also on board the technological terror just as she was inA New Hope. However, this time Grand Moff Tarkin makes her initiate the firing sequences personally in this new preview:

The fact that Leia is experiencing both of these nightmares simultaneously obviously communicates some deep lingering guilt and trauma, most likely due to the imminent debut of the Empire’s second iteration of the massive battle station as seen inReturn of the Jedi.

Star Wars Confirms Leia Still Struggled With The First Death Star

Losing Alderaan

It’s worth remembering that one of the darkest scenes inStar Warswas also one of its very first. As seen inA New Hope, Leia refuses to give up the location of the Rebellion’s base on Yavin IV, even when her homeworld of Alderaan is threatened with absolute destruction. Likewise, even when she gives up a former base,Grand Moff Tarkin still orders the Death Star to fire, completely decimating everything and everyone Leia had ever held dear.

Naturally, this is a dark weight that Leia has had to carry with her while leading the Rebellion against the Empire. It’s also likely one that was somewhat alleviated when the Rebels successfully destroyed the Death Star by the end ofA New Hope. However,it ultimately makes sense why Leia might be facing some renewed struggles during this new issue set before the events ofReturn of the Jedi.

The Second Death Star Is Bringing Back All of Leia’s Trauma

Currently Under Construction

As seen in previous issues, the Rebellion has recently been made aware that the Empire is constructing a brand-new Death Star. As such, the horror of a new battle station terrorizing the galaxy once more would naturally bring back Leia’s greatest loss back up to the surface as teased in this new preview. It should prove to be very interesting to see how she handles this resurgence of trauma and who might end up helping her to keep moving forward in theStar Warscanon.

Star Wars #48is on sale July 17th from Marvel Comics.

Leia Organa

The daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Leia inherited her mother’s political skills and her father’s Force power. She was raised on Alderaan as a member of the royal family, and followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a senator who secretly worked alongside the Rebel Alliance. Alderaan’s destruction changed everything, and Leia became a leader in both the Rebel Alliance and its successor government, the New Republic. She served there for decades, eventually leaving to found the First Order when she sensed its darkness growing. Leia gave much for her ideals, but eventually gave her life to redeem her son Ben.
