Summary
WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead forTransformers#13Starscreammay be currently down in theEnergon Universe, but he’s not out. The solicits forTransformers#13 reveals that the former Decepticon leader survived his brutal fight with Soundwave, and that the key to surviving the future lies with his heretofore untold secret origin. IfStarscream is back in the Energon Universe, this could shake up theTransformerslandscape dramatically.
Coming this October,Transformers#13 kicks off the second year of Skybound’s smash-hit reinvention of the franchise. Starting a brand new story arc, this issue also sees Jason Howard taking over the art duties from regular artist Jorge Corona. It will be written by stalwart series writer Daniel Warren Johnson.

NEW STORY ARC
THE SECRET ORIGIN OF STARSCREAM
After the stunning events of his battle with the Decepticons, Starscream has been left for dead.
Now the secret to surviving the future may be revisiting his shocking past…

Whether or not Jason Howard will be drawing the entirety of the new story arc remains to be seen, but it sounds likeStarscream will play a major role in whatever the creative team have in store forTransformers’ second year. The prospect of learning Starscream’s origin should also be exciting to read, especially since the Energon Universe seems to be setting up anall-new origin for the Transformers themselves.
Starscream Lives to Fight Another Day inTransformers#13
As to what this “secret origin” of Starscream may be, there are a few possibilities. In the original G1 continuity,Starscream was a Cybertronian scientist and explorer who worked closely with Skyfire/Jetfire in the years before the Autobot/Decepticon war broke out.Once Megatron overthrew the ruling Autobots, the Decepticons took control of Cybertron, leading Starscream to ally himself with the faction. How much of this remains in place for the Energon Universe remains to be seen, but the new continuity has already established aprevious relationship between Jetfire and Starscream. Viktor Bogdanovic’s variant cover for this issue reinforces this, as the two are seen smiling together.
Starscream has certainly been through the wringer since being reawakened by his old friend inTransformers#1. He started off by killing Jetfire before taking the role of Decepticon leader for himself. While his brutality gave him an edge early on, it became quickly apparent that Starscream was leading the Decepticons to ruin with his irrational leadership.Soundwave challenged the Starscreamto combat for the right to be leader, and the Seeker was soundly defeated in the ensuing brawl. After losing much of his machinery,Starscream was left for dead, but true fans know it takes more than that to take the weaselly Decepticon out of the picture.

Whose Side Will Starscream Be On in the Energon Universe?
With his past and future currently a blank slate in the Energon Universe, fans have to wonder:whose side with Starscream align with when he makes his return? The Decepticons will likely be hesitant to welcome him back with open arms, and therecently-freed Megatron will be looking for revengenow that fans know Starscream is responsible for him being thrown from the Ark all those millennia ago. Given all of that, is it possible that the unthinkable could come to pass andStarscreamwill ally himself with the Autobots? If theEnergon Universeera ofTransformershas taught fans anything, it’s that nothing is impossible.
Transformers#13will be available October 9 from Skybound Entertainment.
