Summary
At this year’sSan Diego Comic-Con, Bruce Campbell pitches a potential reboot of his and Kurt Russell’s 2005 Disney superhero movieSky High. Starring Campbell as a superhero-turned-teacher with a destructive voice, the movie followed a young teen with two celebrated hero parents enrolling in a school for potential heroes as he waits for his latent powers to kick in. A success with critics and at the box office,Sky Highhas attracteda cult following, and many of its stars have returned to the comic book movie subgenre in the following years.
Despite almost 20 years passing sinceSky Highhit theaters, Campbell revealed toColliderwhile at San Diego Comic-Con that not only would he be open to returning as Coach Boomer in a revival, but he has a pitch and hopes for the project. Seeing that the project still appeals to audiences to this day,Campbell suggested the property could thrive as a serialized series. Check out Campbell’s explanation below:

That needs to be a TV series on Peacock. That would be a good TV show because you’re following high school kids, only they’re superheroes. The stars have to align [for me to return as Coach Boomer], but never say never. Because it’s Kurt Russell. I’d have to work with Kurt again for the third time. I worked with his son, Wyatt, on Lodge 49. I know all the Russells!

Sky High Has Aged Surprisingly Well
And This Could Provide An Opportunity For A Sequel
While the movie was a success upon release,Sky Highhas found itself aging particularly well. Not only is the superhero genre still fairly successful, but many of its stars have found themselves returning to tales of caped crusaders.Campbell would remain a recurring cast member of Sam Raimi’s various Marvel and Sony projects, while Russell and Jim Rash have both appeared in the MCU. Additionally, Rash, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Danielle Panabaker have voiced or played DC characters. As such, theirSky Highconnection is more humorous in hindsight.
With these factors in mind and the fair number of viewers who watched it growing up, Campbell’sSky Highpitch may have plenty of potential behind it.

Furthermore, audiences are now more accustomed to many superhero tropes employed bySky Highthat at the time may have only been known to dedicated comic book readers. Characters such as Laura Kinney, Miles Morales, Kamala Khan, and Jon Kent have successfully shown a new generation of heroes can rise, even taking on the mantles of their predecessors. Even the highly successful mangaMy Hero Academiahas showna series focused on young heroes at a specialized school can be a hit.
With these factors in mind and the fair number of viewers who watched it growing up, Campbell’sSky Highpitch may have plenty of potential behind it. Not only is the superhero genre’s enduring popularity a positive sign, but its expansion into other tones and formats indicatesthere’s interest in seeing unique takes on these familiar ideas. As such, Campbell’s enthusiasm shows that some cast members are eager to pick up where things left off 19 years ago.

Sky High 2 Has Been Pitched Before
A Sequel Was Planned As Far Back As 2016
Campbell’s recent enthusiasm towards aSky Highsequel show is not the first time that a follow-up project has been suggested. As far back as 2016, director Mike Mitchell announced that he and his team had been"working on a sequel to Sky High.“Details onSky High 2were not revealed at the time, and even Mitchell himself seemed unclear about the film’s status, saying “we’ll see how that goes.” For years, any news on thesequel remained dormant.
After years of no updates,Sky High 2was eventually cancelled. Earlier this year, Mitchell revealed that the plot of the would-be sequel involved “all the kids are now grown up and they’re all university teachers at a place called Save U.” Thissequel would have been a great way for members of the original cast to return, albeit in a slightly different context. ThisSky Highplot has not managed to come to fruition yet, but could still have the opportunity to be morphed into a series.

10 Best Superhero Movies Not Made By Marvel Or DC
While Marvel and DC may dominate the genre nowadays, some of the best superhero movies of the last few decades had nothing to do with the two studios.
After the launch of Disney+, interest inSky High 2rose up again. In 2020,writer Mike McCorkle calledSky High"a very natural fit for Disney+“and said that a show or follow-up film could happen “if the film still has the same affection of people watching it and streaming it on Disney+.” At the time, McCorkle did not uncover any details as to what a potentialSky Highsequel would be about, nor to what extent it linked to the original idea for the sequel film.
At this point, it seems like the potentialSky Highsequel is a question, less of whether people will have affection for it and more of an issue of studio backing. As per Campbell’s statement, thecast and crew ofSky Highare clearly still interestedin the IP. With how well the film has aged, the likelihood that audiences support aSky Highsequel also seems high. As the years have passed since the initial announcement of aSky Highsequel, the project’s viability now likely comes down to whether Disney+ would support a potentialSky HighTV show.
