The 5 Best Features of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the newest addition to Samsung’s lineup of foldable phones, and with this model, the company is bringing a number of new and noteworthy improvements. Let’s take a look at the five best features of the Galaxy Flip 5 and examine whether it seems like a worthy upgrade from its predecessor.

1. Gapless Hinge

Perhaps the most important improvement on the Flip 5 is its refined hinge mechanism. The device can now fold shut completely flat with no air gap—unlike all previous Galaxy Flip phones. This helps reduce the thickness of the device and stops dust and water from passing through.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this. A number of other manufacturers had already built foldable phones that leave no gap when folded shut. However, none of those phones come with an IPX8 rating, so Samsung is the first to offer water resistance and a gapless hinge at the same time.

2. A Bigger Cover Screen

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 introduces a bigger cover screen, which it now calls the Flex Window. It measures 3.4 inches, compared to the 1.9-inch one found on its predecessor. The bigger cover screen will help display more information and allow you to perform more actions than before. You won’t need to flip open your phone as often and get distracted—that’s the idea, anyway.

The shape of the cover screen is rather unusual and resembles the Windows File Explorer icon; it’s an interesting design choice for sure, but we’re not yet sure if we love it or hate it. And don’t forget thatbigger cover screens aren’t always betteron flip phones. Time will tell how useful the screen actually is, but it’s certainly one of the phone’s biggest selling points.

3. 256GB Base Storage

Much like the Galaxy S23+ and S23 Ultra, the Fold 5 now offers 256GB as its base storage. This is great news if you always find yourself running out of storage and having to delete photos or apps tofree up memory on your phone.

Now, to be fair,128GB is enough storage for most people. But if you’re a content creator, download a lot of movies, shoot a lot of 4K videos, plan to keep your phone for a long time, or simply want that peace of mind of not running out of space, having more storage from the get-go certainly helps.

4. Bespoke Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Chip

The Galaxy Flip 5 is powered by the same bespoke Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip as the Galaxy S23 Ultra. That means you can expect it to deliver noticeably better sustained performance and improved heat management.

Also, thanks to the increased efficiency of the chip, the phone will be able to offer slightly longer battery life than its predecessor despite having the same 3,700mAh cell.

5. New Color Options

Since the Flip lineup is a fashion-focused product, having new color options is a feature worth highlighting. After all, Samsung is marketing the handset as an accessory for self-expression.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is available in four standard colors: Graphite, Lavender, Cream, and Mint. But if you order from the official Samsung website, you can choose from four additional exclusive colors including Gray, Blue, Green, and Yellow.

Just like its predecessor, the Flip 5 might also get a bespoke edition in the near future that allows you to customize the look of the handset according to your unique taste and reflect your style, so you might want to keep an eye out for that.

The Flip 5 Isn’t Necessary but Fashionable

The Galaxy Flip 5 seems to be a minor upgrade in the grand scheme of things, but the improvements made here are meaningful nonetheless. The foldable form factor is still far from perfect, but it’s becoming more recommendable with each iteration.

If you’re someone who is trying to use their phone less, the Galaxy Flip 5 is about as good as foldables get at this point. And the best part is that, although still expensive, the device costs the same as a regular high-end flagship, so you don’t need to break the bank to buy it.

While smartphones continue to evolve in interesting ways, not all cutting-edge features are essential or worth paying extra for.
