However, one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the movie is the masked character that has been revealed in set photos, which many have commented looks a lot likeThe Boys’Black Noir.

In a new interview withScreen Rantto promoteThe Boysseason 4, Nathan Mitchell, who had seen theSupermanset photos of the new character, was asked what his additional thoughts were on the DCU figure. Mitchell expressed excitement about seeing a character who heavily resembles Black Noir, andThe Boysstar had some insightful thoughts on what may be going down inJames Gunn’sSupermanmovie. The actor expressed how it is crucial for aSupermanfilm that is happening in 2025 to reflect"the context of the current superhero landscape,“sharing the following:

Nathan Mitchell: It was so cool; I was so surprised. I was like, “Wow, are they doing a version of Black Noir in this film?” and again, I don’t fully know what they’re planning. If I were to guess, I would say it’s a version of Black Noir in this shot that we’ve seen. My take on it is that if you’re gonna make a case for Superman in 2025, you have to make a case for him in the context of the current superhero landscape.

That superhero landscape includes The Boys and The Seven. So I think it’s really smart to compare and contrast and make a case for Superman in a world where a team like The Seven might exist. I don’t know for sure, but my guess is perhaps they’re doing something like that, and I’m really honored by the possibility that Black Noir could have been an inspiration for a character in a Superman movie.

10 Things On Every Superman Fan’s Wishlist For 2025’s DCU Reboot

It’s been a while since Superman’s last solo film, and James Gunn’s upcoming Superman could fulfill some long-absent qualities of the character.

Who Is The Mystery Character In James Gunn’s Superman Movie?

To this point, Gunn has yet to comment on this mysterious character, as he likely wants to keep it under wraps untilSupermanis released next year. It is possible that whoever this is supposed to be, their identity will get clarified in the firstSupermantrailer whenever DC Studios decides it’s ready to be presented. But until then, there are plenty of theories regarding who the Black Noir-esque character might be fromtheSupermanset photos.

If the DCU are leaning into Superman villains from the comics, the character could potentially be Neil Quinn, a.k.a. Ulysses, who is a foe for the Man of Steel that has yet to be used in live-action. Gunn is known for looking at more obscure characters from the comics, as shown in hisGuardians of the Galaxytrilogy, which is bound to be the case inSupermantoo. Ulysses would also make a lot of sense as a figure working for the government, given how the set photos have him arresting Superman alongside the military.

With the character having a U-like design on his chest, many believe that this is going to be some variation of Ultraman, who is an evil Superman doppelgänger from Earth-3. While it seems unlikely that the multiverse angle is being approached this early inGunn’s DC Universe, it is possible that this is a new interpretation of Ultraman without his multiversal origins. With Gunn’sSupermanmovie now well under way in terms of production, time will tell if there are potentially other candidates for the identity of this figure in the story.

The Boysseason 4 finale will be released on July 18 on Prime Video.
