Summary
The First Descendantis full of intimidating bosses, and while most of the best examples are the game’s Colossi, the Volgus commanders the player runs into more often can be daunting in their own right. The Volgus start off strong in the tutorial mission with Lord Karel, who is shown to effortlessly render the Descendants ineffective. A start like that is a tough act to follow, butthe game never had a chance with its first major boss, Commander Greg.
Commander Greg leads the Volgus assault into Kingston, the first main combat zone ofThe First Descendant. Throughout the missions, Greg laughs maniacally and attempts to taunt the player. This may have been effective if Greg were not so laughabledue to his name, dialogue, and mechanics.

The First Descendant Has A Great Free Way To Obtain Ultimate Weapons
The First Descendant players can utilize this feature to lessen the tedious grind and avoid purchasing the game-changing Ultimate weapons.
Greg Feels Like A Joke Or Placeholder Name
Not As Cool As It’s Meaning: Vigilant Or Watchful
Despite its grim setting,The First Descendantdoes not always shy away from using names that sound relatively normal. Intermixed withDescendants like Ajaxand Jayber are names like Sharen, Blair, and even Bunny. While these names do not exactly strike fear into the hearts of humanity’s enemies, they do not necessarily need to, sincethey belong to the faction that the player is aligned with. However, when it comes to the game’s main enemies, Greg should not have been a name which made it to full release.
The First Descendant: Every Character & How To Unlock Them
There are a multitude of characters in The First Descendant that players can unlock which allows them to find the right playstyle for them.
“Greg” sounds like a name someone came up with as a joke that made it too far into production, or at the very least, a placeholder name which was meant to be switched out later but never was. Variants of Greg could have been much more intimidating. Look no further than Grigori from the originalDragon’s Dogmafor an example of a terrifying name which still boils down to “Greg.” However, even fixing the goofy name would not fix the bigger problem, which is the mechanics of Greg’s boss fight.

Commander Greg Is Too Easy, Even For A First Boss
First Of Too Many Drones In Boss Fights
After several attempts by Commander Greg to taunt the player, the chance to fight this enemy will finally come at the end of the “Slumber Valley” mission. After destroying the Volgus transmission devices and reaching the commander, the player will be rewarded with a rather lackluster boss fight. The boss fight is so simple that it’s not even unique, being repeated as “Genetically Engineered Greg Clone” in several instances. In this case, however, he will appear as Greg the Star-Crossed.
Commander Greg’s most dangerous attack is a precision bomb which can be dodged relatively easily. As long as the player is sprinting, the attack will miss. Maybe the attack is a little too precise, since even jumping into the air or rolling at the right time can make it miss completely. From there, the player gets to feel the frustration of boss immunity due to floating drones, which will be an all too repeated mechanic in future boss fights. Future bosses make this mechanic even more frustrating by giving the drones their own temporary immunity or having them respawn.

This boss fight could be made more challenging by decreasing the time between the strike being ordered and hitting the player.
To annihilate Greg, the player will just have to dodge his orbital strike and shotgun, then take out his floating drones when they appear. This boss fight could be made more challenging by decreasing the time between the strike being ordered and hitting the player. Rather than giving him drones, which will be a nearly-permanent mechanic going forward, Greg could grab one of his minions and consume them for health, increasing the intimidation factor while encouraging the player to strike quickly. These would help, butThe First Descendantneeds to address that name first.
