Prison Breakis once again being rebooted, but this revival already seems much stronger and more inventive than 2017’s poorly received fifth season. The show’s original run ended in 2009 with the TV movieThe Final Break, which seemingly wrapped up Michael Schofield’s story for good – until he was brought back from the dead in the underwhelming season 5. However, fromeverything we know about thePrison Breakreboot, this show won’t be making the same mistake.

It’s always difficult to balance the line between new and old whenever rebooting a beloved show likePrison Break, but this revival seems to be leaning more toward the new. With an entirely new cast and a new story, this project has been consistently described asa companion piece toPrison Breakrather than another sequel. While it would have been nice to see some ofPrison Break’s most underrated characters again, this decision is ultimately a smart one that caters to both returning audiences and new viewers.

The Prison Break Reboot Is Finally Moving Away From Michael And Lincoln

The Show Will Focus On New Characters

Perhaps the most exciting thing about the newPrison Breakreboot is thatit’s no longer focusing on Michael and Lincoln. Each of the previous seasons has been connected to these characters in some way, and even followingMichael’sPrison Breakdeath, the show still managed to make itself all about him. This rebooted series has already drifted away from these characters, seemingly focusing on a totally new cast with a whole new story.

10 Prison Break Characters Who Should Appear In The Reboot

The Prison Break reboot is in the same universe as the original series, but Michael and Lincoln will not appear. Several other characters could cameo

This is exactly whatPrison Breakneeds if it wants to succeed, asaudiences have understandably grown bored with Michael and Lincoln’s storyover the years. It was great while it lasted, but there’s no denying thatPrison Break’s later seasons failed to capture the spark that made their dynamic so brilliant in the early episodes.ThePrison Breakreboot’s decision to cast new actorsis a very promising sign, as it knows that it can’t keep relying on Michael’s narrative forever.

Prison Break Didn’t Know When To Wrap Up The Stories Of Michael And Lincoln

The Show Dragged Their Narratives On For Way Too Long

The problem withPrison Break’s fourth and fifth seasons was the show’s inability to wrap up the story of Michael and Lincoln, even after the former had seemingly been killed off. The decision to bring Michael back from the dead was one born of desperation to keep audiences interested in the story, but what the show’s writers didn’t quite realize was that it was this very reliance on Michael that was making the show fall apart. The episodes had begun to feel repetitive, and nothing particularly new was happening in the character’s life that needed him to return.

As long asPrison Break’s revival doesn’t merely rehash old material and actually tries something new, it should be able to justify its existence.

It’s fair to say thatPrison Breakseason 1 was the best, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing interesting in the stories that followed. The introduction of William Fichtner’s Alex Mahone in season 2 was a great decision that managed to keep the show going for a while longer, and the return to a prison setting in season 3 was another notch in the show’s belt. Unfortunately, the show failed to recapture this magic in the fourth and fifth seasons, constantly trying to one-up itself instead of giving Michael and Lincoln’s characters the closure they deserved.

Prison Break Without Michael And Lincoln Makes Sense, But It Is Risky

The Show Needs To Take Risks To Succeed

It won’t be easy to return toPrison Breakwithout Wentworth Miller or Dominic Purcell, assuming they don’t appear in the reboot, but it’s the right decision. There will be a lot of pressure on the new cast to live up to the greatness of the show’s first season, but as long asPrison Break’s revival doesn’t merely rehash old material and actually tries something new, it should be able to justify its existence without too much trouble.

Although aPrison Breakreboot with Michael Schofieldsounds like a good idea, it is ultimately too risky.Prison Breakseason 5 proved that such an underwhelming story can retroactively ruin an otherwise great show, and if another revival was met with a poor reception then it would just spoilPrison Break’s reputation even further. At least with a new cast of characters, there isn’t too much pressure of upholding a legacy riding onPrison Break’sshoulders anymore.
