“We’re trying to do a small movie right now. I’m not going to say what it is. I was like, can I just do a movie without any visual effects in it for like five minutes? And then we can get back to the insanity. So that’s what we’re trying to do right now. I’m supposed to be writing this little movie.”

A Small Movie Is What Zack Snyder Needs After Rebel Moon
The Rebel Moon Movies Lacked Substance
After 2021’sArmy of the Dead, Snyder’s next project was hyped as his biggest and boldest yet. Beginning life as a failedStar Warspitch,Snyder’sRebel Moonmovies take placewholly in a science-fiction universe of his own creation with a vast history. The promise ofRebel Moonwas essentially that it featured Snyder working with a large budget with seemingly few creative constraints; this would be his unadulterated space opera vision. Before the film even came out, the filmmaker teased the franchise’s endless storytelling potential, with room for multiple more films and a TV show.
Zack Snyder’s Netflix Show Can Quickly Remedy Disappointment Surrounding His Recent $166 Million Project
Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic didn’t quite pan out as expected for the director, which makes his new Netflix show an even bigger opportunity.
Then, the films came out. TheRebel Moonreviewshave been some of the most negative of Snyder’s career, and even audience scores on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb have been less than stellar. While the films have been seemingly drawing some solid viewership figures for Netflix, both were widely criticized for being all style and no substance. Both are full of impressive visual effects shots and slow motion action sequences, but are light on characters and themes that makes audiences care about these sequences.
Two R-ratedRebel Moondirector’s cuts are set to release on August 2, with both expected to feature significant amounts of additional footage that expands on various characters and storylines.
Part of Snyder’s appeal as a filmmaker is undeniably his style, and he clearly knows how to stage and shoot grand visual effects sequences. It will be interesting, then, to strip all of this away and see Snyder working on a much smaller scale, where character becomes far more essential. Though it certainly sounds likeSnyderwill be getting back to effects-heavy films in the future, his next movie is shaping up to be an interesting departure, and potentially a breath of fresh air.
