AWarhammergame under development by indie game studio Thought Pennies was canceled last year, according to reports. TheWarhammer 40Kfranchise has found recent video game success thanks toWarhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, a new installment of the first-person shooter franchise. In addition to a single-player mode, Space Marine 2 also has a PvP mode that will be updatedthroughout 2025with new content and characters. Other video games that have pushedWarhammerforward include strategy-basedWarhammer Fantasy: Total War IIIandWarhammer 40K: Darktide, which features 4-player co-op action.
A new report byMP1stclaims that anotherWarhammer 40Kgame was in development for several years, but was cancelled in 2024. While never officially announced, ex-employees of the indie game studio Thought Pennies state on their resumes that they were working on a “multiplatform, social role-playing game” set in theWarhammer 40Kuniverse. Another description of the game described the game as being an “Co-Op PvE Action RPG with a cast of unique heroes and playstyles"that was canceled when funding was lost. Thought Pennies went through several rounds of layoffs, presumably tied to the game’s cancelation.

Warhammer 40,000’s newest Army Box adds new Death Korps of Krieg units, which are a great addition to an existing Astra Militarium army.
The success ofSpace Marine 2led to an unexpected windfall for Games Workshop, with the company reporting £26.1 million in licensing income, largely thanks to the game’s performance. Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree noted in the company’s mostrecent earnings reportthat the strong performance ofSpace Marine 2wasn’t guaranteed, but that the company was looking for future room for growth. “We recognize that successes like these for Warhammer are not a given in the world of video games,“Rountree said.“Clearly we are looking for the next one. We remain cautious when forecasting royalty income.”

Our Take: Warhammer Needs To Continue Building Its Video Game Portfolio
Games Workshop has never been exactly stingy with video game licenses, so it’s surprising that this one didn’t come to pass. Either Games Workshop wasn’t convinced that the game would properly capture the ethos ofWarhammer 40Kor the company had changed its approach to how they partner with studios to make video games. One thing’s for certain - with an upcomingWarhammer 40Kcinematic universe coming soon courtesy of Henry Cavill and Amazon Studios, Games Workshop will need to keep making sure that new fans have fresh ways to jump into their worlds through video games and other mediums.
