Summary

Wolverine’s helmet has never appeared in a live-actionMarvelmovie, which has been a bone of contention among many fans, but it may finally show up inDeadpool & Wolverine. The movie brings Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Logan to the MCU for the first time alongside severalother characters from Fox’s X-Men Universe. IfDeadpool & Wolverine’s record-breaking trailer viewing figures and projected box office are anything to go by, it is safe to say that the movie has drawn an incredible amount of hype.

This began with the first look at the titular heroes inDeadpool & Wolverinewith an image that showed Wolverine sporting a yellow and blue suit that closely resembles his comic book counterpart. Given Jackman’s presence was just as valuable to generating hype as the suit he was wearing, it is no wonder that this first look did not cover his face with a cowl. Nevertheless, one year after that image was first released, there is still no sign of the cowl, prompting questions about when - if at all - it will appear.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman join the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine, which boasts an impressive cast supporting the two Marvel leads.

Marvel Fans Have Always Wanted Wolverine’s Helmet To Appear

Jackman’s Wolverine has one of the most indelible legacies in superhero movie history after appearing in nineX-Men movies. Although a handful of fellow mutants like Magneto and Psylocke boasted mostly comic-accurate costumes at some point in their X-Men movie career, the same privilege has never been afforded to Wolverine. It is no wonder, then, thatfans have been clamoring for some semblance of a comic-accurate Wolverine costume ever since he debuted in the franchisewith civilian clothes and black leathers in 2000’sX-Men.

This enthusiasm is mostly confined to comic book fans and anyone who watchedthe X-Men animated showslike the iconicX-Men: The Animated Seriesof the 1990s who were looking for as many live-action nods to the originals as possible. Even in these series,Wolverine stands out from his fellow X-Men with one of the most garish outfits in the lineup. Suffice it to say, in the context of the early live-action adaptations of the X-Men in the 2000s, this would have stuck out like a sore thumb - mostly because, frankly, it would have looked ridiculous.

Deadpool & Wolverine Marks A Milestone For Wolverine’s Costume

The ostentatious design of Wolverine’s bright yellow costume and helmet may not fit the vibe ofX-Men, but it certainly fits the Deadpool franchise. It is no surprise that Deadpool would be the one to bring Wolverine’s comic book costume to live-action, given his penchant for acknowledging real-life gripes. Thankfully, despite there being no sign of it inDeadpool & Wolverine’s trailersand photos, extraneous promotional material suggests that it will appear nonetheless.

Logan(2017)

Civilian Clothing

An official image of the mask was unveiled at this year’s CinemaCon, where a promotional cup forDeadpool & Wolverinewas distributed. Given this is official material and that it would be remiss of Marvel to debut one part of his costume without the other, it’s a safe bet that it will appear. With that in mind, it looks as though Marvel is keeping Wolverine’s iconic mask up its sleeve for a reveal that is no doubt intended to elicit raucous reactions from Marvel fans who have been waiting 24 years to see Jackman’s Wolverine don his iconic helmet.

Why Wolverine Has Never Worn His Helmet In A Movie

A winged helmet with bright yellow spandex would have been jarring.

X-Menwas released in 2000 to great fanfare, arguably launching the modern era of comic book movies after its success. Yet the movie made sure to tread the fine line between comic book fan service and a level of plausibility that would appeal to general audiences.Wolverine’s garish helmet, unfortunately, would have been too unbelievable for casual audiencesto wrestle with - even more so when considering how Wolverine has been characterized inFox’s X-Men movie franchiseas a no-nonsense and down-to-earth lone wolf. A winged helmet with bright yellow spandex would have been jarring.

Nevertheless, Wolverine’s comic-accurate costume nearly debuted inThe Wolverinein an alternate ending. In it, Logan is offered a suitcase by Yukio as he prepares to leave Japan, which he opens to reveal a comic-accurate costume complete with a cowl. He turns up his nose at the offer, which is ultimately for the best. Wolverine’s helmet might work inDeadpool & Wolverine- especially if donned for a fleeting scene - but the fact of the matter is that Jackman would be hard to take seriously in full costume.
