Twisters Is Gearing Up To Beat The Original Movie In One Key Way On Opening Weekend
Summary
Twistersdirector Lee Isaac Chung explains why his upcoming film doesn’t recreate a memorable detail from the original. Serving as a loose successor to 1996’sTwister, which was directed by Jan de Bont and starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, the upcoming disaster flick tells the story of a meteorologist who joins forces with a retired storm chaser to deploy new technology to track and disrupt tornadoes. Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones lead theTwisterscast, with trailers promising that the new movie will honor many aspects of the original.
In a recent interview withCNN, Chung reveals that one part ofTwisterthat won’t be included inTwistersis the original’s famous scene in which a cow is picked up by a tornado before floating comically in front of Paxton’s character’s truck. While there are plenty of references and callbacks to the 1996 movie, Chung has a good reason for not including another cow. Check out his comment below:

“Everybody wants the cow. They think they want the cow. But I promise you, you would be disappointed if there was a cow. Any time I talk to anyone about that original ‘Twisters’ they would say, ‘Oh yeah, the big flying cow movie.’ I felt like I would hate to make a movie, update it, and just hear, ‘Oh yes, you made the new flying cow movie.’ So that was it – that was the decision.”
Twisters Has A Challenging Line To Walk
But The Early Response Has Been Promising
On paper,Twistersdoesn’t sound like a movie that needs to exist. The original is beloved and was a box office success, but there was no clear story to tell in a sequel, especially since Paxton passed away in 2017. To tell an entirely new story with a new cast with only a slight variation on the same title felt like some fairly cynical studio mining of a 28-year-old IP.
10 Reasons Reviews For Twisters Are So Promising
The long-awaited sequel to the 1996 disaster film Twister premieres in the summer of 2024, and the early reviews for Twisters are optimistic.
TheTwistersreviews, however, have been generally positive from critics. From the early reactions to the movie, it seemsthe spiritual successor has done exactly what it needed to do, which is walk a line between honoring the original while also adding exciting new elementsinto the mix. Like the original, it sounds like audiences are in for some effects-heavy tornado action, but there’s also a compelling human element to the story stemming from two charismatic movie stars at the center of the story.

While the movie has thus far been a hit with critics, the real test will be whether there is interest from audiences. TheTwisterIP might not be enough to get younger audiences to theaters, but Powell, Edgar-Jones, and positive reviews might be. Plus, theTwisterstrailersand marketing have arguably been very effective at selling the movie as essentially the perfect summer blockbuster. Clearly, though, audiences shouldn’t expect to see any flying cows whenTwistershits theaters later this week.
