Every year on March 31, World Backup Day is on the calendar to remind us of a simple truth: you need to back up your data before it’s too late.
It might not be the flashiest tech holiday ever (or not even an actual holiday), but it’s one of the most important. If you’ve ever lost your phone, spilled coffee on your laptop, or watched a storage drive die without warning, you know how fast years of data can disappear.

Photos, documents, work files, saved games—they’re all vulnerable to corruption. This is why backing up your data is essential. It’s so important we’re here tocelebrate World Backup Dayall week with new articles and tips—all of which you’ll be able to find featured right here as they go live. Stay tuned for advice on how to back up without spending much (or anything), what files to back up, data protection mistakes to avoid, and much more.
Backup Basics
World Backup Day started as an online campaign to remind people (and businesses) that data loss isn’t a matter of if, but when. Since then, it’s become a yearly prompt to check your backup habits, fix what’s broken, or start from scratch if you’re operating without a stable backup plan.
But blindly backing up your data isn’t always the right answer. Many people have different opinions of what counts as a “real” backup.
For most, a true backup isn’t just dragging files to an external hard drive once a year and then forgetting about it the other 364 days of the year. Most people should follow what many consider the “gold standard” of backing up your files: the 3-2-1 rule.
This method says you should always have three copies of your data stored on at least two different media types, and one should always be stored “off-site.” Off-site generally means somewhere in the cloud, as that’s usually the easiest way to have a physically separate backup. Ideally, you also want your cloud backup to be encrypted to help keep bad actors from getting easy access to your data.
Cloud tools like Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, and OneDrive make it easy to sync your data—but syncing isn’t the same as backing up. If a synced file gets corrupted or deleted, that change can spread everywhere. Utilizing a proper backup protects you from that.
It’s also important to remember that backups aren’t just for computers anymore, either. These days, our phones carry just as much important data about our lives—sometimes more. App settings, photos, authentication tokens, and saved conversations can all vanish in a factory reset, a phone swap, or if someone steals your phone.
World Backup Dayis a great excuse to check your phone’s backup settings and ensure your most important data is safely duplicated.
