Yara Gambirasio was a 13-year-old Italian girlwho disappeared on June 08, 2025.Gambirasio was both obsessed with gymnastics and responsible about informing her family about where she was going to be, so when she didn’t return home from the gymnasium on time and her family couldn’t get ahold of her, they began to worry. As soon as they learned that she had left gymnastics practice, they called the Carabinieri, the Italian police agency that handles such crimes, to report that their daughter was missing.
Gambirasio lived only a few blocks from the gymnasium where she was last seen.
The case gained a lot of media attention because of Gambirasio’s age and law enforcement’s inability to find her.Hundreds of volunteers joined the search for the young girl, whose parents described her as bright and kind, without success, andthe initial search was hindered by a lack of working security cameras at the gymnasiumand doubt about whether Gambirasio had ever left. Sadly, exactly three months later, a man flying a model plane over an empty field found her decomposing body, leading the police to suspect the girl had been abducted and sexually assaulted.

It was difficult to perform a complete autopsy because the corpse was partially frozen; it had been dumped in a field during the winter, and this made it harder for forensic scientists to determine the cause of death and other aspects of her murder. After an extensive process that involved cutting the areas of the victim’s underpants that might contain traces of DNA and separating Gambirasio’s DNA from that of an unknown person (viaScience Direct),forensic scientists were able to isolate about 300 samples,which they then checked against the DNA of 15,000 people in the area who voluntarily provided it.
This was the largest DNA sample tested up to that point anywhere in the world, which left it open to mistakes. Additionally,the accused killer, Massimo Bossetti, was the illegitimate child of someone whose DNA closely matched the unknown person’sfound on the body. He was linked to the murder after someone who volunteered their DNA was discovered to be a close match. That person, named Ignoto Uno by the police and media, was part of a large family, consisting of 11 brothers and sisters. Eventually, the police obtained a DNA sample of an uncle who had died and determined it was a close match.
The next step was to test this man’s children to see which one of them was a strong DNA match. When none of them were, it became clear that this man must have had an illegitimate child.Tracking down who this child could be meant interviewing and trying to get DNA samples from over 500 womenwho had sex with the deceased man. Eventually, the police obtained a voluntary sample from Bossetti’s mother and learned that he and his twin sister were the children they were looking for.
The final step was to obtain Massimo Bosetti’s DNA. Suspecting he was the killer, the police stopped him while he was driving and administered a breathalyzer test. Forensics testing on the DNA left behind when he put his mouth on the breathalyzerconfirmed he was a match to the DNA found on Gambirasio’s body,leading to his arrest.
